Definisi

Reported speech (indirect speech) adalah bentuk kalimat yang digunakan untuk melaporkan apa yang seseorang katakan tanpa mengutip langsung kata-katanya. Biasanya, tense dari kalimatnya berubah sesuai dengan konteks waktu dan pembicaraannya.

Contoh:

  • Direct Speech: She said, “I am happy.”
  • Reported Speech: She said that she was happy.

Aturan Utama Mengubah Direct ke Reported Speech

  1. Perubahan Tense
    Jika verb reporting (contoh: said, told) dalam past tense, maka tense dari kalimat yang dilaporkan juga harus bergeser ke tense yang lebih lampau.
    • Present → Past
      “I am tired.” → She said she was tired.
    • Past → Past Perfect
      “I went to the park.” → He said he had gone to the park.
    • Future → Conditional
      “I will call you.” → She said she would call me.
  2. Perubahan Kata Keterangan Waktu & Tempat
    • Now → Then
    • Today → That day
    • Tomorrow → The next day
    • Here → There
  3. Penggunaan “That” (Opsional)
    Dalam reported speech, “that” dapat digunakan setelah reporting verb.
    • Direct: “I like coffee.”
    • Reported: She said that she liked coffee.

Statement (Pernyataan)

  • Direct: He said, “I love soccer.”
  • Reported: He said (that) he loved soccer.

Question (Pertanyaan)

  • Yes/No Question
    • Direct: She asked, “Are you coming?”
    • Reported: She asked if I was coming.
  • Wh-Question
    • Direct: He asked, “Where do you live?”
    • Reported: He asked where I lived.

Command/Request (Perintah/Permintaan)

  • Direct: She said, “Close the door!”
  • Reported: She told me to close the door.

Catatan Penting

  1. Jika reporting verb dalam present tense (contoh: says, tells), maka tense dalam reported speech biasanya tetap.
    • Direct: “I like pizza.”

  2. Jika kalimat berisi fakta umum, tense tidak berubah.
    • Direct: “The sun rises in the east.”
