Pengertian Noun Clause

Noun clause adalah klausa yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda (noun) dalam sebuah kalimat. Noun clause biasanya dimulai dengan kata penghubung seperti that, what, who, whom, which, when, where, why, how, atau if / whether.

Fungsi Noun Clause

Noun clause dapat berfungsi sebagai:

  1. Subjek dalam kalimat.
    Contoh:
    • What she said was surprising.
    • That he left early is unusual.
  2. Objek langsung (Direct Object).
    Contoh:
    • I know what you mean.
    • She said that she was tired.
  3. Objek preposisi.
    Contoh:
    • They are curious about what he did.
    • I am thinking about whether I should go.
  4. Pelengkap subjek (Subject Complement).
    Contoh:
    • The question is what we should do next.
    • The truth is that she loves him.
  5. Appositive (menjelaskan kata benda sebelumnya).
    Contoh:
    • The idea that we should leave early is brilliant.
    • Her belief that she will succeed motivates her.

Jenis Noun Clause

  1. That-Clause
    Dimulai dengan that untuk menyatakan fakta atau informasi.
    Contoh:
    • I believe that he is honest.
    • She admitted that she made a mistake.
  2. Wh-Question Clause
    Dimulai dengan kata tanya seperti what, who, which, where, why, when, how.
    Contoh:
    • Do you know where she went?
    • I wonder how he solved the problem.
  3. Yes/No Question Clause
    Dimulai dengan if atau whether untuk pertanyaan ya/tidak.
    Contoh:
    • I don’t know if she will come.
    • He asked whether they agreed.
  4. Bare Noun Clause
    Tidak menggunakan kata penghubung secara eksplisit (biasanya pada kalimat informal).
    Contoh:
    • I thought you were coming.
    • He knows she is lying.

Ciri-Ciri Noun Clause

  1. Berfungsi sebagai kata benda dalam kalimat.
  2. Dapat menggantikan posisi subjek, objek, atau pelengkap.
  3. Biasanya diawali dengan kata penghubung seperti that, what, who, which, if, whether, dll.
  4. Tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai kalimat sempurna.

Contoh Kalimat Noun Clause

  1. Subjek:
    • What you said made her angry.
  2. Objek langsung:
    • I don’t understand what he wants.
  3. Objek preposisi:
    • We talked about why they left.
  4. Pelengkap subjek:
    • The problem is that we don’t have enough time.
  5. Appositive:
    • Her suggestion that we leave early was accepted.
