Past Perfect Tense adalah salah satu bentuk tense dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu tindakan atau keadaan yang sudah selesai terjadi sebelum tindakan atau keadaan lainnya di masa lampau.

Pengertian

Past Perfect Tense digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian atau tindakan yang telah selesai dilakukan sebelum suatu kejadian lain di masa lampau. Tense ini menunjukkan bahwa satu peristiwa terjadi lebih dulu dibandingkan peristiwa lain.

Rumus

Rumus dasar dari Past Perfect Tense adalah:

Positive (+):

  • Subject + had + past participle (verb 3)

Negative (-):

  • Subject + had + not + past participle (verb 3)

Interrogative (?):

  • Had + subject + past participle (verb 3)?

Penggunaan Past Perfect Tense

  1. Menunjukkan Kejadian yang Sudah Selesai Sebelum Kejadian Lainnya:
    • Contoh: “She had left the house before it started raining.” (Dia sudah meninggalkan rumah sebelum hujan mulai turun.)
  2. Dalam Kalimat Tidak Langsung (Reported Speech):
    • Contoh: “He said that he had finished the work.” (Dia berkata bahwa dia telah menyelesaikan pekerjaan itu.)
  3. Mengungkapkan Harapan yang Tidak Terpenuhi:
    • Contoh: “I had hoped to see you, but you were not there.” (Aku berharap bisa bertemu denganmu, tapi kamu tidak ada di sana.)
