Gerund adalah kata yang menyerupai kerja yang memiliki fungsi sebagai noun atau kata benda. Gerund bertipe verb-ing. 

Contoh
  • Eating people is wrong.
  • Hunting tigers is dangerous.
  • Flying makes me nervous.
  • Brushing your teeth is important.
  • Smoking causes lung cancer.

Berikut ini contoh kalimat gerund:

As a racer, bike riding is no longer a hobby, but a job.

One of the best methods to learn English is through reading.

Try as I might, I still can’t figure out programming.

I don’t advise running without shoes. Might hurt your feet.

Tipe-tipe Gerund

Terdapat enam tipe gerund. Yaitu sebagai berikut:

  1. Subject: Riding is my favorite activity.
  2. Subject complement: My preferred activity is biking.
  3. Direct object: I love riding.
  4. Indirect object: My friends gave biking a try. 
  5. Object complement: I see my father riding every week.
  6. Object of a preposition: I take a paid leave for riding.
